A CAVU Initiative

We the undersigned support Gov Lujan Grisham's directive to end wasteful practices including unnecessary venting, leaking and flaring of methane gas associated with oil and gas production. These outdated practices waste up to $244 million in salable gas every year and tens of millions more in tax and royalty revenue that could be invested in New Mexico’s education system.

Methane is the primary component of natural gas and a potent greenhouse gas that exacerbates climate change and contributes to dangerous air pollution.

In the last four years, New Mexico has produced HALF of United States’ methane waste on federal and tribal lands. Yet, 93% of this waste was AVOIDABLE.

Methane waste is an enormous problem—but it is also an opportunity for New Mexico to take the lead and enact innovative solutions that protect the environment and public health, and also work for our economy.
